Listing pages – have you heard about them, yes i guess you must have seen them many places. Using google for search, this will lead to a listing page sort of. Agreed I am not specifically talking about SERP – search engine results page, i am talking about listing page only. Agree SERP is also a kind of listing page, however lets focus our views on pure listing pages.

What are listing page

Listing pages are the pages that are used to display products on a page. Go to eBay, monster, amazon site, you see there products displayed may be books, electronic stuff etc. These pages are called as listing pages, as it allows items to be listed on them.

Important elements to have on Listing page

The key elements to have on listing page – i dont think most of the designers will accept and agree with me on the key elements that should be present on Lsiting page

• Search – is important on listing page, it will give the user option to look what they need. Provision of advanced search can help in narrowing down the preference.
• Sort option – When the items are present on the page, suppose i need the cheapest item or the oldest item. I should be able to perform a sort and make a decision call.
• Images – Images help user’s with association and know how things look, they can take a call about your product if images are being displayed. Effective image handling via tool tip and image slide shows are few options.
• Refine results – All the products have certain attributes based on which they can be grouped effectively and user’s can take a call whether to buy them or not.
• Important details – All the products that are shown should have important details.
• High complexity – On the main page show minimum information that will allow user to take a decision other details can be shown on the next page, when user click on individual page then more details can be shown there .

Ebay listing page

Ebay listing page has all the elements that i have discussed above, they have search, images, sort, refine, image tool tip etc.

Amazon listing page

Amazon listing page looks good however they are not so great as compared to Ebay. Amazon listing page lacks optimum real estate utilization.
